Winter Safety Tips: Prevent Slips and Falls

Well, it’s that time of the year when the temperatures fall, and so do the ice and snow. During these icy and snowy conditions, the incidence of injuries due to people losing their footing increases. Here are some tips that may help reduce and prevent unnecessary injury this winter season.

  • Monitor the weather: Don’t get caught waking up to an unexpectedly snowy morning. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and allow extra time to remove accumulated ice and snow properly.
  • Wear appropriate footwear: Avoid stepping outside in house slippers. Instead, wear shoes or boots with waffled or textured soles to increase friction on wet and icy ground.
  • Keep ice removal tools accessible: Store shovels and salt where they are easy to access, like near the door. Keep a bag of salt inside so you can sprinkle it on pathways before stepping outside to shovel.
  • Watch for icy spots: Identify areas where ice tends to form. Remove ice promptly and apply additional ice melt to prevent further buildup.
  • Use handrails: Always use handrails where provided for extra support.
  • Identify elevated changes: Clearly mark steps, ramps, and changes in elevation. Many falls occur when transitions in walking surfaces go unnoticed.
  • Keep entranceways clear: Make sure entrance halls and stairs are free of wet material. Continuous foot traffic can spread snow and ice indoors. Use caution signs and floor mats to soak up moisture and reduce the risk of slips.
  • Adjust your walking style: Take shorter steps to maintain a better center of balance over your feet.
  • Walk carefully: Walk slowly, keep your head up, and avoid leaning forward.

By keeping these tips in mind, you can reduce the chance of injury and enjoy a safe, pleasant, and cheerful holiday season.
