When an individual is undergoing cancer treatment, physical therapy may not be the first healthcare field that comes to mind. Early cancer treatment involves appointments with oncologists, radiologists, nurses and surgeons and they are essential to the treatment of cancer. However, the role of physical therapy in cancer recovery is often overlooked for most patients.
Cancer rehabilitation is a growing area in medicine due to the increase in cancer survivorship. More and more individuals are beating cancer because of advances in medical technology, treatment and early detection. More than 15.5 million Americans with a history of cancer were alive on January 1, 2016, most of whom were diagnosed many years ago and have no current evidence of cancer.
The good news is that it is never too late to take advantage of rehabilitation services for cancer recovery. If your patients are having trouble accomplishing daily tasks or functioning at a prior level of independence, seek out a rehabilitation expert and regain your vitality. As each individual experiences different impairments during and after cancer treatment, it is important to have an individualized evaluation to focus on your patient’s recovery. Physical therapy can address common cancer related impairments including, but not limited, to:
CRF: (Cancer related fatigue) Individualized aerobic training, strength training and functional management training is known to reduce the effects of cancer related fatigue both during and after medical cancer treatments. Our physical therapists and physical therapy assistants can develop an exercise program for you based on your current functional levels.
Pain: There are many pain relief strategies that can reduce the intensity and frequency of pain after cancer treatment. Treatment strategies may include soft tissue mobilization, modalities, therapeutic stretching and strengthening.
Deconditioning: Rebuilding endurance for daily activities and cardiovascular function can be difficult during and after cancer treatment. Our physical therapists and physical therapy assistants are able to educate and monitor your patients cardiovascular endurance training and help regain their stamina and overall balance.
